Join me on the Journey

In my life this week…

This week I am doing the single mother thing.  Special man has gone away on a Fly and build to the Solomon Islands, so it’s just me and the kids.  We managed to get back to swimming lessons on Tuesday, but have spent the last two days back at the doctor – we are still fighting off these bugs that have bugged us for the last month or so.

In our homeschool this week…

As this is the last week of school before the Easter holidays, we are finishing lots of things off.  Special Son is completing his Powerpoint presentation of the Continents and Princess Joy Bug is putting the finishing touches on her text innovation.  We have also been reading and discussing Habitat destruction and what we can do to prevent it.  They say that Education is the beginning to putting an end to the destruction of our wildlife, and after this term, I can see just how powerful information can be in changing hearts.  One fact we learned yesterday – Rainforest the size of a football field is cleared every minute globally – scary stuff!!!!!!!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

We went to swimming lessons on Tuesday.  We haven’t been for 2 weeks due to everyone being sick.  It’s a fantastic place!  I am amazed at how much the kids have improved in such a short time.  Tuesday was their last lesson – we’ll begin again in October when it gets warm again.  My mother came to swimming lessons with us, the kids really enjoyed showing her their newly developed skills.

My favorite thing this week was…

Playing baseball with my kids in the backyard. I’ve recorded it in more detail here.

What’s working/not working for us…

Covering every curriculum area- things like LOTE just seem to slip through the cracks.  How do you manage?

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…

What is your routine?

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

I have just started up my own Blog hop (well I’m planning to do one for each day…I’ll keep you posted :)).  Here is the link to my first one – Thursday’s Thoughts, a day in my life.  If you click here it will take you to an explanation.  Basically it’s very similar to the homeschool journey, only it’s questions about one day in your life.  I’d love for you to join me!!!!

Have a great day!!!

Welcome to Friday’s Family Fun Blog Hop – so glad you could join me!!

Have you heard the statement – the family that prays together, stays together?  Well I want to take that one step further and add, the family that prays  AND plays together, stays together.

What is it that provides a sense of family?  Many things contribute, but none so much as the tradition of time.  It is not enough to take time to be a family just on holidays or when it is convenient.  You have to let the people in your family know they are special by making, looking forward to, and keeping a series of scheduled social “just for fun” engagements.  This special time set apart allows everyone to bond with the others, not only in the activity planned, but also in the anticipation  of that special time.   Dad needs to be a part of these family fun times too!!

I believe if you want to draw the hearts of your family closer, you will have to provide a minimum of one special time each week that is entirely theirs – time you plan, schedule, and defend at all costs against any activities that would steal away from you those special moments.

Friday’s Family Fun blog hop is the place for you to share your family’s special times with others.  I am hoping that what is written here will inspire you to continue in this special time with your family and inspire others to take up the challenge to spend time playing with their family every week…maybe even every day!!!

So here is my very first Friday’s Famiily fun post…

As Special man is away in the Solomon Islands, our Family Fun time this week did not include our Daddy person, but we still didn’t want to miss out on the fun.

Berenstain Bears is a favourite of my kids at the moment and in some of the books/videos brother bear and sister bear play baseball.  Hence baseball, has become the flavour of the month.

Yesterday we decided to play baseball together.  I was the pitcher (so everyone could actually have a chance to hit the ball – Special son prefers to show how fast he can throw the ball, rather than think of helping others to actually hit the ball).

We decided it would be tipsy run.

To be honest with you, I haven’t had so much for a long while.

Princess Joybug took to the plate, adopting her Miss Grizzle face (I so wish I had a photo to show you), she furrowed her brow, to show us her determination to smash that ball out of the ball park – it was hilarious.  She did of course do some pretty legendary swings and misses, but always made sure she chased the ball wherever it went, swinging wildly until she came in contact.  Then she took off around the bases.

This running meant Princess Curly tops would take off running too – not really sure of which direction she was going, or where she was supposed to be running to, she basically just ran in and around all of the fielders and runners, inhibiting any chance of tagging the hitter – what a laugh!!!!!

One of my highlights was also Princess Curly tops’ base running.  Her running direction was basically anywhere she could go to run away from the ball.  It may have included touching a base, it may have included running all over the yard, but always ended with her on home base jumping up and down “yaying” herself for her fine effort :).  Precious moments!!!!!  May I add, that her base running only began after she had gone and retrieved the ball that she had just hit 🙂  Oh to be three!!!!

Pitching was of course taken very seriously – we made sure that we did a series of pitching signs before every pitch – meaning something to someone 🙂 and bringing lots of smiles.  Mummy the Magnificent will definitely pitching for the Major League soon I’m sure!

My last round of pitching was made rather difficult due to Princess Curly tops new fielding position.  She decided to stand behind me (more like under me) with her head poking out between my legs.  :).  She never caught any balls, but she did catch my heart!!!

We may have only achieved one out in the entire game, when Special son and I managed to work together and tag Princess Joy Bug, but we did achieve having a very special time together.  Each one of us enjoying each others company and valuing each other’s differences.  Our focus was not competition, but having fun.

Did we achieve our aim?

Special son’s first comment this morning – Mum, when are we going to play baseball together again?

I think we did :).

Why not share some of your family fun days with us too.  Just follow the links below to share with us.

Have a great day!!

Thanks for joining us.  I look forward to reading your posts each week!

I thought I would try my hand at this Blog Hop phenomena.  Hopefully it will lead to more people coming to visit and inspire me to write more often.  I really do find blogging a very therapeutic thing to do, so motivation to make my fingers type on that keyboard is a good thing.

I hope that Thursday’s Thoughts becomes part of your weekly routine too.  To find out what you need to do, just click on the picture above.

 So here goes…

My waking thoughts were…

Go Away!!  (This needs an explanation :))

I was woken in the still dark hours by Special Son requesting to watch Berenstain Bears on the computer this morning.  Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.  Of course the answer was NO!!!!!  I had not gotten to bed until 11:00pm, as I had to wait up for someone coming to drop stuff off at our house, then Princess Curly tops woke up TWICE due to her coughing bug.  Needless to say, I was not impressed with his FAR TOO EARLY request.  And for those of you who were wondering – no he is never allowed to watch Berenstain Bears on the computer in the morning!!!

The first thing I did today was…

Referee.

Sibling Rivalry – my favourite sport.

After his visit this morning Special son went back to his room to play lego, he was soon joined by Princess Joy Bug (after she had woken me and requested something – I had just gone back to sleep after my previous visit – and did I mention – IT WAS STILL DARK!!!!!!).

A little while later, I was awoken again by a whisper a millimetre from my nose – It was Princess Curly Tops.  She was being refused entry to her brother’s bedroom.  I decided to give up on sleep at this point and go play mummy…the day begins :).

Today I most needed God when…

the Telstra Salesman came to the door for the SECOND time this afternoon.  I told him I wasn’t interested the first time, as I was on the phone to Special Man, so I couldn’t talk.

He said he would come back.

I said that wasn’t necessary.

He thought it was.

This time it was tea time.  Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.  It is so hard to be kind and loving to pushy salesmen – or is it just me.  Corrie Ten Boom says in one of her books, that every encounter we have with people has been orchestrated by our Heavenly Father.  This encounter for me has been recorded as a FAIL.

5 things I accomplished today…

  1. Took three kids to a doctor’s appointment and survived (just)
  2. Did a small amount of grocery shopping (to the tune of Princess Joy Bug’s Tantrums…her name and her attitude are a little bit of a contradiction here :)).
  3. Blow-dried my kids hair before they went to bed.
  4. Fed my children three meals.
  5. Succeeded in making Princess Curly Tops have her daytime rest (the previous two days were not as successful – the removal of all of her dollies threat worked a treat :))

Today I wish I hadn’t…

had to remove a dog’s present from my back yard.  As I was preparing breakfast (which by the way was the worst batch of sultana pikelets EVER!), I thought I saw this flash of white go past the back door.  I shook my head, thinking it must be a bird.

I was mistaken.

Very soon, The White flash and its buddy Mr Black were back tearing in and out of the toys on the back patio.  I looked up just in time to witness The White Flash leaving me his signature dish on the back lawn!!!!  Operation “Doggies get out of my back yard” went into full swing.  This was a very noisy operation (no undercover agents here!), with all three kids yelling at the top of their lungs and me opening the gate to let the intruders aka The White Flash and Mr Black back onto the street where they proceeded to run up and down the road harassing every dog in every back yard for a good half an hour.

Special Son was especially impressed with our neighbour’s method of doggie removal – spraying them with her hose.  It was an eventful morning – and we hadn’t even gotten out of our pajamas yet!

Today’s special moment…

Special Man is currently away doing a fly and build in the Solomon Islands.  Originally this meant that we wouldn’t be able to communicate with him for the entire duration of his stay away.  Well today – I got a phone call!!!!!  It was a special moment indeed.  It’s amazing how great that voice sounds when you are missing it so much!!!

A photo from today…

Sisters with the blow-dried hair…

My thought for today…

No person has ever gone blind from looking at the bright side of life.

Have a great day!!!!!!!

Can’t wait to hear about your day 🙂

In my life this week…

On Sunday we held our very first “Family Council”.  The kids were so excited, all sitting there with their notepads and pens ready to “record” important information.  It took us a while to establish the ground rules – each, if broken, required a 5 starjump punishment, followed by an apology and an asking of forgiveness.  It was amazing how many starjumps Special son managed to fit into the council time (Interrupting is definitely one of his strong points :)).  But also equally surprising was how involved the kids wanted to be in the decision making and also the great ideas they came up with.  This is definitely something we will continue!

In our homeschool this week…

For school this term we have been travelling around “God’s World”, visiting each of the continents that start with A.  So far we have been to Africa, Antarctica, Asia and this week we visited America (we combined the two).  At each continent we have completed a lapbook on one of the endangered animals – this week we studied the sloth – using this terrific lapbook.  I am loving learning along with the kids – did you know that a sloth only comes down to the ground once a week?

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

This week has been filled with shopping, as we have had a sudden cold snap.  We spent most of yesterday looking for long pants and long sleeved shirts.  Can’t exactly say I am happy with what I have to choose from this year, especially the choice of shirts for Special Son.  He has now moved into size 7 – the big boy’s clothes.  Unfortunately this means that almost every shirt has some sort of hideous creature or skulls blazened across the front.  We came home with only 2 shirts – I am NOT impressed!!!

My favorite thing this week was…

On Wednesday, Special Man and I went out shopping – ALONE!!!!!  Yes the wonderful Grandparents came and played with the kids and we enjoyed some blissful kidfree hours shopping.  We also shared lunch together (a very rare treat).

What’s working/not working for us…

This can be answered in one word – ROUTINE.

Although we have a loose routine in place, we need to tighten this up quite considerably.  Especially the time of morning we begin school.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…

I was thinking about this, this week and recorded my Homeschooling favourites here.

Since we have just met I will post the link to my website God Did Creations.  This will give you some more insight into what I do in my “spare” time 🙂
